When the owner of Shleifer Furniture was planning to retire, he approached UD+P about the sale of two properties in Portland’s Central Eastside neighborhood, just across the river from Downtown.

One property, located at 509 SE Grand, was home to Shleifer Furniture’s retail store for 80 years until its closure in 2016. The other, located four blocks away, most recently served as Shleifer Furniture’s warehouse.

Built in 1906, the Shleifer building is a four-story brick masonry building that was once the Chamberlain Hotel. Though the hotel rooms on the upper floors were shuttered in the 1970s, they remain intact. In 2015, UD+P and Beam Development jointly acquired the building for adaptive reuse. Our plans involve a full renovation of the building, restoring the historic character of the exterior, modernizing outdated systems, and preparing the upper floors to be used again as a hotel.

To date, UD+P has completed four successful projects in the Central Eastside: American Brush, Frame/Work, Slate, and Coffee Warehouse. We are proud that our projects are contributing to the neighborhood’s vitality and prosperity by providing beautifully designed residential, retail and office space. In addition to Hotel Chamberlain, we have two more Central Eastside properties in our pipeline: 535 SE MLK and 550 SE MLK.
